Vital Report - Derby 2-0 Cardiff

Cardiff's Championship season continued with a defeat at the iPro Stadium against Derby on Saturday as the struggle for goals continues after the international break, even though that was one the Bluebirds had gone into with a win.

Second half goals from Thorne and Weimann were enough to see Derby, which the Rams deserved, to a two-nil win.

Once again, as Derby dominated the first half - certainly possession wise, Cardiff had Marshall to thank as the Bluebirds 'keeper pulled off a fine save to deny Weimann an opener for the host.

Marshall also kept out a 25-yard drive from Butterfield with Cardiff's best chance in a goalless first half, as has been the case in many games involving the Bluebirds this season, saw Dikgacoi unable to convert a pull back from Jones.

Perhaps if roles had been reversed it might have been different?

The second half started with Derby on the attack again with a goal line clearance this time preventing Johnson from breaking through before, as seemed inevitable at some point, Derby took the lead.

A strike from former West Brom, who were heavily linked with Marshall in the summer of course, Thorne (55) saw the Cardiff 'keeper beaten and had Derby ahead early in the second half when he finished off having been teed up by Martin.

Thorne looked to double his tally, and the Derby lead, but this time Marshall kept him out but with former Aston Villa forward Weimann (76) on hand he made sure of the points from the rebound for the Rams with a little under 15-minutes to go.

Cardiff could have found a way back into the game but Jones headed over from close range, perhaps if roles had been reversed at the end of the first half Jones wouldn't have made a difference!

Another blank, with only two meaningful attempts on target, means Cardiff have average a goal per game in the Championship this season! Despite this the Bluebirds are in ninth but could Charlton's former Celtic striker Tony Watt be the answer to the problems?

His loan arrival is imminent by all accounts....
