Vital Report: Middlesbrough 2 Cardiff 1
It was a second defeat for Cardiff in four days when Middlesbrough consolidated their promotion push while the Bluebirds saw ours take another knock with a 2-1 defeat at the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday.
Middlesbrough started well with both Kike and Grant Leadbitter going close to breaking the deadlock with Kike feeling that he was fouled by Simon Moore, who again filled in for David Marshall in goal, but nothing was given.
A first half, with chances at a premium, ended goalless when Bamford failed to hit the target with the clearest cut chance of the half.
When Kadeem Harris was kept out by Middlesbrough goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos in the second half, our best chance of the game and perhaps the best chance of the game, Bamford put Middlesbrough ahead just after an hour as he put the finishing touches to a slick move.
Settled by the goal Middlesbrough could have settled the game but Kike headed a Bamford cross wide and was also closed down by Moore, who also saved from Albert Adomah with Adam Reach also close as a second almost seemed inevitable.
The points were all but wrapped up with just over 10 minutes to play when Lee Tomlin made it 2-0, putting the finishing touches to a good move that involved Adam Clayton and Reach.
After coming off the substitutes bench Kenwyne Jones gave us hope with four minutes left but it wasn't enough.
Victory for Middlesbrough sees them up into the second automatic promotion spot just one point behind Championship leaders whereas were languishing in 13th with the play offs looking someway off.
