Vital Report: Cardiff 3 Colchester 1

3 - 1

Cardiff City Stadium

2-1-15. 7:45pm

Attendance: 4,194

Cardiff avoided an FA Cup upset on Friday with a 3-1 win over League 1 side Colchester but the main talking point was a near empty Cardiff City Stadium. An attendance of 4,194 was the smallest ever, lower than the 5,545 that came for the League Cup game against Dagenham in 2009.

Defeat to Watford saw Russell Slade feel the brunt of our frustrations, our form would have played a part in the small crowd but also the continued protests against Vincent Tan contributed towards this, some that did attend continued to protests against him.

Six changes were made to the side that lost 4-2 to Watford, but this was still a strong enough side.

Joe Ralls had an early chance but Colchester goalkeeper Sam Walker turned his effort away but it was Ralls that made the breakthrough before half time. His effort, which took a double deflection off Kaspar Gorkss and Cole Kpekawa, left Walker helpless.

It wasn't all our own way though as Gorkss put a headed just wide with Gavin Massey close to equalising but Simon Moore, who was filling in for David Marshall who had a well earned rest, prevented this to get down low and pull off a fine saw to keep us ahead.

Two quick fire goals in the second half killed off the game by the hour.

Ben Turner's header was put home by an overhead kick from Kadeem Harris to give us some breathing space soon after the break with the win secured on the hour when Kenwyne Jones, literally on the field for seconds, headed home a Peter Whittingham corner to score with his first touch.

A Colchester goal was something that was deserved for their efforts, Freddie Sears seemed the more likely to do this and he got this with a consolation 15 minutes from time but we had already made sure we would be in the fourth round draw.
