Vital Report: Charlton 1 Cardiff 1

Cardiff were on course for a Boxing Day win at Charlton, against their 10 men, until a later equaliser denied us a rare away win in the 1-1 draw at the Valley.

Having led for so much of the game and with just two minutes to go against 10 men Russell Slade would have expected us to hold until this and come away from London with a much needed three points but it wasn't to be.

After some early pressure the Bluebirds broke through when a long throw in from Aron Gunnarsson was flicked on by Sean Morrison, up from the back, with Tom Adeyemi heading past Neil Etheridge to give us an early lead.

Minutes later we almost repeated the process. This time Gunnarsson's throw in was cleared, but only to the edge of the area with Adeyemi having another chance but this time he fired just over the bar.

Callum Harriott looked like being Charlton's main danger to us, he was causing some problems but we weren't coming under that much pressure but it was Harriott who saw red with a little over half an hour played for a high tackle on Craig Noone.

Going down to 10 men seemed to rejuvenate Charlton as the reacted well to this to create the best chance that they had of the first half soon after. Yoni Buyens pass to George Tucudean gave him a chance but David Marshall was equal to his volley and turned this away for a corner with Buyens the provider again for a second half chance that that Johann Berg Gudmundsson could only hit straight at the grateful Marshall.

An equaliser was being threatened with a Gudmundsson corner headed onto the outside of the post by Tucudean as we held our lead.

The referee didn't endear himself to the home fans when Morrison was perhaps fortunate not to be shown a red card himself, getting away with a yellow card, when bringing down Tucudean who was through on goal. From that freekick the post again denied Charlton when Gudmundsson drove his effort against this.

Gudmundsson was pulling the strings with Charlton seemingly destined to equalise but when Marshall against denied him and Morrison cleared a Tucudean's effort off the line you couldn't help but think we might get away with it.

We didn't though as the Charlton fight earned them a point through Gudmundsson's 30 yard strike into the top corner when he wasn't closed down quickly enough. If Igor Vetokele had shown more composure when clean through with the last kick, and not smashed wildly over, Charlton would have got the point that perhaps they deserved?
