Former Cardiff City striker Jason Byrne has completed his free transfer to Irish side Bohemians after a nightmare year in South Wales.
Byrne was brought in to score goals, and to take pressure off Chopra. He cost around £75,000 at the time when we also spent a similar amount on Warren Feeney.
Since then, the pair have mustered 1 goal between them and barely made an impression on first team affairs. It is also worth noting, that we haven't spend a single penny on transfer fees since.
Byrne spoke of the move back to his native Ireland, he told The Irish Times:
'It's just one of those things but when you look back on life you can say that you gave it a go. I've no regrets.'
'It wasn't a nightmare as such, rather one of those things where the manager doesn't like you and you just have to get on with it.'
Byrne certainly didn't impress, but does Dave Jones have difficulties involoving his strikers? Steve Thompson recently spoke of the personal differences between him and his manager - while Byrne now thinks Jones just didn't like him.
As to how our last £150k of transfer kitty money, before even the sale of Chopra and Gunter, was spent on two unproven duds at this level - we won't know but surely Jones and Co. took all the releveant scouting / tracking steps, and if so then he did rate Byrne but was disappointed.
Byrne has left on a free transfer, a gamble that didn't pay off at all, and cost a cash-strapped club a sizable amount. His impact was so slight, his one winning goal aside, that his transfer and wages money would have been much better to be saved - would we have noticed a difference...?
