Cardiff Squad: Interest & Prognosis

Cardiff City are know to have lingering cash flow problems, along with the cloud of the Langston court action hanging above Ninian Park. Yet they are an established Championship club with realistic ambitions of challenging for a play-off spot.

That has inevitably set vultures circling, and a number of Cardiff City players have attracted interest from other sides in the division or from the Premiership.

Chris Gunter has already made the move to North London, after joining Tottenham Hotspur for £3.5m. The move raised eyebrows with Gunter hot property in South Wales and a young star in the making. Jason Byrne has also left to join Irish side Bohemians.

Firm bids have been received for Tony Capaldi, Paul Parry and Stephen McPhail. All three were immediately rejected although Leicester City manager Ian Holloway could yet make a higher bid for his former Plymouth charge Capaldi.

Further interest has been registered in captain Darren Purse and young midfielder Aaron Ramsey. Purse has been out of the side recently and Charlton Athletic are ready to pounce. However, we need that strength in depth and Purse is still very much a part of the first team squad.

Joe Ledley has been the subject of the most transfer speculation recently with numerous clubs reported to be interested and a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers already ruled out by the player himself.

Any players who are to leave are better doing so early. We would need to replace any first team member leaving the club and need as much time to do so. The interest in many players is ominous, and the club have done little to warn suitors off. However, the sale of Gunter has eased immediate financial pressure to sell and Cardiff fans will be hoping to see a modest strengthening of the side with a new goalkeeper and perhaps 1 outfield player coming in, ready for immediate first team action.
