Cardiff City dominated the first half of the game, having plenty of possession but it looked a familiar story as a moment of hesitation from Kevin McNaughton allowed John Jackson to fire home Colchester's first chance moments before the break.
However, Cardiff came out fighting second half and equalised through Steve Thompson after good work from Parry and Hasselbaink.
Moments later, Colchester had a great chance through former Swansea City winger Kevin McLeod, Schemiechel did well to cover but Cardiff countered and took the lead through a fine Peter Whittingham strike.
Whittingham turned provider as Cardiff continued to attack and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink finished off to put The Bluebirds 3-1 up.
It didn't end there and Adam Virgo turned into his own net after good work by Thompson to end a fantastic four goal spell within 20 minutes for the resurgent Cardiff City.
Hasselbaink and Whittingham both went close as City continued to be positive and the team visibly grew in confidence. A vital win, and certainly one to proveide a platform from which to build.
