Cardiff City's teenage defender has sent a powerful message to his manager as Dave Jones prepares for make-or-break games to save his job.
Cardiff have been appalling recently, and the manager has been granted a stay of execution - given two games to change the side's fortunes. Changes have been needed for a while, but Jones has been faithful to his misfiring stars. However, he must be contemplating alterations to his side with players like Capaldi, McPhail, Rae, Fowler and Hasselbaink particularly under threat.
Chris Gunter strode to the forefront last season and really impressed. He works hard, tackles well and has a good positional sense. In short he has the makings of a very good defender and has impressed when given the chance.
He was watched by Dave Jones on the weekend when, dispite not playing for Cardiff City of late, he turned in an excellent performance against the Republic of Ireland. Gunter was playing at left back, to accomodate Eardley in the side and although unfamiliar on that flank, Gunter was solid, efficient and really looked the part.
Gunter hopes to earn a run in the Cardiff City side after proving what he can do against established Premiership players. He told the South Wales Echo:
'I just hope I can build on that performance for both club and country.'
'It just sends a little message in a nice way that I`m ready to perform for my club and country.'
The talented youngster will get another chance this week as the injury-ravished Welsh squad face Germany in the next Euro 2008 qualifier.
