Cardiff City have not impressed recently and one area that particularly appears to be misfiring of late is the beleagured frontline.
The veteran duo of Robbie Fowler and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink are struggling to maintain impact for 90 minutes and seem to drift in and out of play. In short, Cardiff have no forward outlet and can become squeezed and invite pressure. There are glimpses of former genius, but are they frequent enough to warrant their places?
In the last few games, including against Scunthorpe United and Liverpool FC, the transfer listed striker Steve Thompson came on to impressive effect. For me the big Scot gave us another dimension, mixing up play and putting himself about well.
He has been winning headers, holding possession up, running channels and causing problems for opposition defenders. He scored a dramatic equaliser against Plymouth Argyle earlier this season and it is his groundwork which looks to have improved significantly over the summer. He has produced several deft touches and created shooting opportunities running directly at players, something you would not expect from the big man.
Thommo was transfer listed after a lack of goals last season, but I think he deserves a start against Crystal Palace and give Robbie Fowler a chance to impress from the bench - a role that may suit his style.
Of course, Dave Jones is unlikely to take this option and is almost certainly sure to stick with his two aging starts up-front, again limiting Thompson to a bench role.
Do you agree? Is it time to unleash the Thommohawk? Or should he remain caged a little longer? Let us know!
