Cardiff City 'Great Dane's Debut'

Cardiff City have not had a settled goalkeeper since the departure of Neil Alexander over the summer. David Forde took over for the remainder of last season while Ross Turnbull and Michael Oakes have both had sustained periods between the posts but failed to impress.

This weekend saw the debut of Kasper Schmeichel, son of legendary Denmark and Manchester United hero Peter Schmeichel, who has joined on loan for an initial 1 month period.

Kasper is highly rated at Manchester City and has featured in their good start to the season but has now been surpassed by Joe Hart and Andreas Isaksson.

On Saturday, Schmeichel registered our first shot on goal with a thunderous clearance and was fortunate to receive several hopeful Scunthorpe crosses under no pressure to ease the nerves.

He looked calm, assured, and even though the defence had never played with him before, looked more confident than Turnbull and co. He had little to do in terms of real action. One tip-over from a shot that was still rising and heading over and a few catches and clearances under some pressure.

The goal conceeded will have disappointed Schmeichel after Jim Goodwin fired the equaliser across the Dane and into the far corner, he would not have expected the shambolic defending but whould have got a hand to the shot.

Hopefully, Kasper will stay longer than his initial 1 month loan and get a real chance to establish himself in the side and build the foundation for an improvement in Cardiff City form and results. A great deal of our current problems come down to confidence and having a settled and solid keeper behind us, can only be a huge help.

Schmeichel is cup-tied for the Carling Cup trip to Anfield so Michael Oakes is expected to take-over between the posts.
