Cardiff Man Stakes Claim For Starts

Peter Whittingham did not enjoy the best of games against his former club Burnley last weekend ( Full Ratings). The winger looked slightly off the pace and had a poor first touch, he made several contributions early on but played little part in the second half and will have been disappointed not to have taken his chance after a late call-up to replace the ill Stephen McPhail.

However, Whittingham fired two goals in the reserves 4-1 win over Northampton Town in a behind-closed-doors friendly yesterday. A free-kick and second half strike gave Whitts his double with Steve Thompson and youngster Terell Webb also on the scoresheet.

Whittingham has been used mostly as a substitute this season with the England U21s man having little chance to impress. He has one league goal, the equaliser at Norwich City, and will be looking to force his way into the side now.

Joe Ledley's excellent game in central midfield could allow Whittingham to play on the left in future if Ledley is preferred to McPhail or Rae in the centre - either way we do look to have genuine competition in midfield with Paul Parry also impressing and the influential Trevor Sinclair to return.
