Cardiff City host Preston North End tomorrow still looking for their first home win of the season.
The Lilywhites have been regular play-off contenders in recent seasons but crucially lost star striker Dave Nugent to Portsmouth over the summer. His goals have helped Preston to challenge but his replacement, Karl Hawley from Carlisle, indicates they could struggle to maintain their status this season.
The summer captures of tenascious midfielder Kevin Nicholls and impressive full-back Billy Jones raised hopes but Preston have not performed well so far. A meagre return of 4 points from 6 matches will have dissappointed manager Paul Simpson.
Preston have lost all three matches on the road this season and were knocked out of the Carling Cup by Morecambe.
Cardiff City are in poor form at home, having lost all three games so far. The performances have been OK and growing but chances have been missed and defensive lapses costly.
The Hasselbaink / Fowler partnership is growing with gametime and fitness while Gavin Rae and McPhail are improving as a midfield unit. The performance against Warford was good, two set piece errors costing the 3 points, and Cardiff desperately need to collect maximum points.
Cardiff have no points at home, and Preston none away so one of those statistics must change. Cardiff are progressing and matched Watford so Vital Cardiff sees them pulling off a 2-0 win over the Lilywhites.
