Cardiff: 'Historic' Groundshare Deal

Cardiff City FC have formally announced the widely anticipated groundshare agreement with Cardiff Blues RFC for the new stadium complex at Leckwith.

The club have managed the situation carefully, after widespread opposition from football and rugby supporters alike. However, the deal was always likely to proceed with Peter Ridsdale firmly behind the scheme for many months now.

A statement of the official site read:

'On behalf od Cardiff City Football Club I am delighted that an agreement has been reached whereby Cardiff Blues will use the new stadium at Leckwith as their home ground.'

'Supporters of both teams will enjoy facilities that in the past can only have been dreamt of.'

The deal is different to the grounshare agreement between Swansea City FC and THe Ospreys RFC at the Liberty Stadium. Cardiff City will own the new ground outright and 'loan' it to the rugby club for their fixtures.

One superb feature of Ninian Park is the quality of the pitch surface, we have to hope that the new pitch can withstand the rigours of professional football and rugby played frequently on it.

Many have concerns, but financially at least, the deal appears to make sense for both clubs, as well as the City of Cardiff, with councillor Rodney Berman also firmly behind the deal:

'I'm pleased that the teams have come together and reached this historic agreement.'
