Who's That Going Over The Hill ?
Well we all know Michael Chopra has packed his case - a year after moving to the Welsh capital, and taken himself back North over the Beacons and Pennines to Sunderland.
It`s a different sort of hill though, that the replacements for Chopra are heading over with both Robbie Fowler and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, 32 and 35 respectively being described by some quarter as being 'over the hill` as professional football players.
Neither are in an way, spring chickens. They come to Cardiff City, each of them, I the twilight of their careers. From them we expect to see experience, leadership and a canniness that will see them succeed t this level and replace the pace and physique that will be deserting them in their later years.
Their pedigree has never been in question, both have excelled at the top flight. One man who believes that both are valuable signings, and that the critics are merely jealous, is Cardiff City chairman Peter Ridsdale:
"I think age is irrelevant - it's what you can do on the pitch. You can be 21 and ineffective; you can be 35 and outstanding. This isn't an age issue; it's about skill and quality." Ridsdale told the official website.
Of course, you`d expect 'PR Pete` to put a positive spin on things, but Trevor Sinclair already looks an inspired signing, Hasselbaink scored 2 great goals on debut (albeit against Hereford Utd) and both Fowler and JFH seem to have retained the huger and the will to win.
Only time will tell of course, but I believe that both our 'over the hill` strikers will cause problems, that both can score goals and we have done well on a commercial an playing front and we can have a good crack at the play-offs with our blend of youth and age.
