Cardiff 'Ring-Leader' Misses Clash
Apologies to all readers for the terrible pun titling this article !
Cardiff City's captain Darren Purse was absent from the matchday squad on Saturday when the Bluebirds overcame FC Twente in our rinal pre-season friendly.
Purse has been recovering from injury, and is short of match fitness, as such he was due to be a substitute for the game.
However, a petty row meant that Purse was unable to take the field due to his wedding ring. Under Welsh FAW rules, rings are forbidden on the field of play for safety reasons. Purse was unwilling to take off his ring, which has never left his finger though his married life.
The incident has never happened before, as Purse always taped his ring safely so as to keep it from contact with others, this is OK in league games so has never any affected any game in the English leagues or cup games.
It seems a rather petty problem, rules are rules and Purse should perhaps have done the best thing for his team. However, it is un-necessary and an important symbol to the player who would not have expected such a problem in a minor friendly.
