Cardiff City's star attraction limped out of action midway through the first half on his Bluebirds debut to leave the crowd dissappointed.
In his cameo appearance, Fowler showed some good movement and a hunger for the game - however he is still lacking match fitness and was withdrawn as soon as his hamstring began to tighten.
The former Liverpool FC, Man City and Leeds Utd man was responsible for an attendance double what is usual for such a game but the Bluebirds played well enough and it was Fowler's replacement (Warren Feeney) who scored the only goal to win is 1-0 for City.
There were already fears that Fowler, who has suffered with injuries over his career, would be unavailable for the season start but Dave Jones indicated his withdrawal was just a precaution and that Fowler has a week to work on his fitness before Stoke visit:
'Over the last couple of days Robbie has felt stiff and sore and tired, we've pushed him hard,'
'We took him off as soon as it (the strain) started to tighten up but we've still got a week to get him ready.'
