Cardiff City are still searching for the right man to bolster their attacking options but have struggled to identify a suitable target.
Derby County frontman Steve Howard fits the bill, but the newly promoted side want to keep the big man.
Another possibility is Birmingham City's Rowan Vine. Cardiff tried to get him in January but were beaten by a huge bid from the Blues. Cardiff City have renewed their interest after the striker was made available but Brum want to regain some of their fee and are demanding upwards of £2m whereas City value the former Luton Town man at £1.2m.
However, even if a deal could be thrashed out, Cardiff City may yet face competition from Sheffield United for Vine. The Blades top target, is Everton striker James Beattie - but they look set to fail in that bid. However, with the parachute payments from the Premiership, Sheffield United have money to spend and could easily match Birmingham's valuation for Vine.
It has been a frustrating summer for the Bluebirds, who are working on a strict budget. They have signed some good players, without spending a penny - and Dave Jones is still searching far and wide for the 'big number 9' to complete his squad and ensure the Bluebirds compete for a play-off place this season.
