'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Cardiff City 'Winging Our Way'

One aspect of Cardiff City's scintillating form last season was the fast-paced attacking football that left opposition defenders gasping for breath. It is a strategy that the Bluebirds will hope to repeat agin this season and one area of improvement is the quality of the wingers - vital to that style of play.

Joe Ledley (left) and Paul Parry(left footer on the right) were the early season widemen for the Bluebirds and both passed well and looked to attack with confidence. Neither got outside their man often enough and the quality of the crossing was not ideal.

We saw throughout the season that few goals were scored from that type of move, and with big Steve Thompson in the middle - Cardiff missed out on a good source of goals.

Since then, Cardiff have recurited England U21 winger Peter Whittingham who has pace, tricks and loves to go outside his man.

Also former England right winger Trevor Sinclair has just joined. He adds experience and a cool head while his fitness on the Portugal tour was impressive and he still retains some pace.

Constantinos Charalambides, a Cypriot triallist, impressed in a reserve team game and on the Portugal tour and Dave Jones is currently weighing up whether to offer the winger a permanent deal.

It is an area Cardiff City must look to capitalise on in the coming season and they look better equipped to do that this year. There are more options and with attacking full-backs such as Capaldi, McNaughton and Gunter - this could prove a prosperous source of attacking threat for Cardiff City.
