Cardiff Squad Review: Chris Gunter

After an up-and-down season, Cardiff City finished comfortably mid-table. A scintillating start was followed by a dismal end and the same players looked half as effective as previously.

VitalCardiff brings you an end of season review of each player. If you disagree then feel free to leave a comment at the foot of this article or e-mail Vital Bluebirds with an alternative review!!

The reviews will be published every weekday between 10-11am:

44 Chris Gunter

Chris Gunter burst onto the Cardiff City scene in November after being called upon in a selection crisis for the Bluebirds. He was thrown in at the deep end but put in a solid display against QPR in a game that City eventually lost.

A number of consistent and determined performances justified Gunter's selection and the young full-back won praise from many quarters.

Defensively sound, Gunter showed a willingness and determination to attack - something that was missing from Cardiff's game after the early season form faded.

One poor game against Hull City saw Gunter rested from first team action for several weeks, but he returned with some assured perfromances to justify his reputation as one of the game's young stars.

Comparisons with fellow Welsh youngster Gareth Blae arose and Gunter won his first Wales cap in a friendly against New Zealand. Aside from this recognition, Gunter won the 'Apprentice of the Year' Award at the Football League Awards and was also the subject of a 7 figure bid from Premiership giants Everton.

A fantastic start for the 17 year old who looks to have an exciting future ahead of him. He will compete with kevin McNaughton for the righ-back berth this season and will surely get his chance again this coming year.
