Cardiff Squad Review: Chris Barker

After an up-and-down season, Cardiff City finished comfortably mid-table. A scintillating start was followed by a dismal end and the same players looked half as effective as previously.

VitalCardiff brings you an end of season review of each player. If you disagree then feel free to leave a comment at the foot of this article or e-mail Vital Bluebirds with an alternative review!!

The reviews will be published every weekday between 10-11am:

21 CHRIS BARKER

It was clear from the beginning of the season that Chris Barker was surplus to requirements at Ninian Park. A robust, solid defender Chris Barker is a typical left-back with a good engine and a tough tackle. However, he is not of Dave Jones` preferred mould for a full-back and did not figure in the Bluebirds` season.

He moved to newly promoted Colchester United early in the season but returned to train with Cardiff City for one day a week. After helping the U`s to an impressive start (in which they beat Derby and Southampton), Barker`s loan period was extended. He earned preiase form the Colchester fans and manager Geraint Williams after a string of consistent performances.

Not eligible to play against parent club Cardiff, Barker was a near ever-present for the Essex club and helped propel them to a great league position and they eventually finished ahead of Cardiff City.

One memorable 60 yard run saw Barker win a penalty for the U`s although he picked up 2 red cards including one which saw him suspended for the final game of the campaign.

Despite interest from the U`s, Barker eventually moved to Queens Park Rangers.
