Cardiff Linked With Greek Goalkeeper

Cardiff City are scouring the market for a new goalkeeper to challenge David Forde for the position next season as a replacement for departing stopper Neil Alexander.

The likes of Glyn Garner (Leyton Orient) and Ged Doherty (TNS) have been linked previously while Peter Ridsdale mentioned holding preliminary talks with a 'Premiership' goalkeeper.

Another option now looking possible is the acquisition of Greek goalkeeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos who is out of contract at Hartlepool. Cardiff scouts have reportedly watched the player on a number of occasions this season, but they face competition for his signiture from fellow Championship sides Watford and Sheffield Wednesday.

Manager Danny Wilson is determined to hang onto Konstantopolous but acknowledges he faces a difficult battle:

'I'm sure other parties will be interested in him because he is a very good goalkeeper, but I don't know who they are.'

'It's understandable if teams are interested in him, now we have to compete with them to try and keep him.'

'The decision comes down to Dimi, that's for sure.'

'If we lose him we will be disappointed.'

With Cardiff on a tight budget and searching for free transfer targets wherever possible, the release of Burnley's Danny Coyne and Crystal Palace's Gabor Kiraly may also interest the Cardiff management.

It remains to be seen whether the ambitions of the board matches that of the supporters. None of the goalkeepers mentioned have the quality or experience of Neil Alexander who is set to walk out on a free transfer despite wanting to stay.
