Cardiff Defender Attracts Prem Clubs
Cardiff City captain Darren Purse is interesting Premiership Clubs Charlton Athletic and Sheffield United according to The Daily Mirror. The price quoted is a hefty £2m.
Purse has played a crucial role for Cardiff City since his arrival from West Brom in July 2005. His experience and determination have provided the rock around which the Cardiff City defence has been built over the last two seasons.
The emergence of younger starlets such as Glenn Loovens and Roger Johnson has subsided the need for Purse and he looks to be third now in the pecking order.
Nevertheless, Purse is an experienced professional who still has plenty to offer Cardiff City. His experience would be beneficial in a defence including youngsters Chris Gunter (17), Kevin McNaughton (23) and Joe Ledley (21).
Cardiff rejected initial interest from Wigan Athletic in the January transfer window as they were not prepared to let Purse go, however Dave Jones intends to cull half the squad during the summer and has identified Purse as a possibility to leave.
We would almost certainly require an experienced defender if Purse should leave, but £2m would be sufficient to oversee a good deal of squad rebuilding and represent an excellent profit on a player bought 2 seasons ago for just £600k.
I just can;t see us getting anything near £2m.
