Cardiff vs Sunderland (team news)

Cardiff City face an anxious wait on two of their most influential players ahead of tomorrow's visit of Sunderland.

Top scorer Michael Chopra could provide a welcome boost if he makes his return (3 weeks ahead of schedule) after a hamstring injury while Riccy Scimeca also has a pulled muscle. Both players face late fitness tests but will play if available. Simon Walton and new boy Warren Feeney stand by to deputise in each case.

One major decision comes at centre-back with Loovens and now captain Darren Purse ruled out. Kevin McNaughton is expected to cover in the unfamiliar role again alongside Roger Johnson. That means another start for teenage defender Chris Gunter at right-back and Kerrea Gilberts returns to the bench.

Paul Parry and Joe Ledley return from international duty playing just an hour between them over 2 games.

Sunderland have injury issues of their own for the trip. Dangerous winger Carlos Edwards is out with a shoulder injury while former Bluebirds favourite Graham Kavanagh has only just returned to training and will not be fit to play. Kav had been out several weeks with a knee injury.

Nyron Nosworthy suffered a knock to his ankle in training and is rated as doubtful.

On the plus side for Sunderland is the return to contention of Stephen Elliot (right attacker / striker) and Swedish midfielder Tobias Hysen.

Slovakian international Stanislav Varga is also available and could replace Nosworthy should he fail a fitness test.
