Cardiff: Promotion Rivals Slip Up

Cardiff City's on loan defender Chris Barker helped the Bluebirds last night as his Colchester side defeated Cardiff's play-off place rivals Southampton.

An impressive double from striker Jamie Cureton was enough to see off the Saints, despite their usually impressive home record. Cardiff probably demoralised George Burley's side after they let slip a 2 goal lead against the Bluebirds and now the travelling U's have taken all three points to frustrate Southampton further.

Southampton were the team directly below Cardiff and now remain in 8th. They would have leapfrogged Cardiff with a win last night but now lie 3 points behind having played a game more. They have now lost 3 of the last 4 games and could slip out of contention.

Cardiff cannot slip in the table this weekend now, but any return from a tough game with Derby would be impressive and important. A point would see them open up a gap between them and Southampton & Stoke beneath them and give the Bluebirds a slight safety cushion.

A fantastic start to the weekend as one of our major rivals slip up, City take matters into their own hands now as they face Derby County at 3pm.
