Should Cardiff drop Thompson ?

Cardiff City's bullish centre forward Steven Thompson has come under pressure of late having not hit the net since a Boxing Day Brace against Plymouth back in December.

Even more worryingly, Bluebirds fans may remember that Thompson was in fact going through a lean spell before that double. At that time, City were struggling themselves and Thommo's lack of goals was more noticable. In recent weeks, Chopra and Whittingham have provided most of Cardiff's goalscoring needs but it it unusual and slightly worrying that a striker who has made 33 Championship appearances has scored just 5 times.

Cardiff City play with two out-and-out wingers in Whittingham and Parry, yet fans struggle to remember any headed goals by Thompson - thought to be a strength of his. The Scotsman is the 2nd top scorer, so if talismanic striker Chopra was ruled out - City would be in dire straits and this set-up is not becoming of a promotion chasing side.

There are certainly major plus-points to picking Thomspon. His work-rate, effort and selflessness are excellent, and he holds the ball up well. Aside from goals, it is difficult to fault his contribution and while he can take some ccredit from a number of other people's goals - Dave Jones, the fans, and Thompson himself must know he needs to score on a more regular basis.

Are there other options? There are many strikers on the books but only Redan and Campbell in the same style. Campbell has been poor when needed and Redan is untried. Could Byrne and Chopra play together?

Steve Thompson scored the winner against tonight's opponents Southampton when the sides met at Ninian Park. The same result here would simply be perfect - C'mon Thommo!
