Cardiff Left Selection Problems

With the recent acquisition of left midfielder Peter Whittingham from ASton Villa, Cardiff City are much stronger on the left wing. After a goal-scoring drought and lack of creativity, Jones has moved to bring in a pacy, direct winger who can get forward and create chances.

But what does this mean for homegrown talent and local lad Joe Ledley? Joe enjoyed a fantastic start to this season and lead the way in the Actim Player Rankings before falling down and looking a little jaded and low on confidence of late. Rumours earlier in the season suggested that clubs such as Arsenal were keeping a close eye on the youngster and figures of up to £3million were being touted in the press.

Ledley switched to left back for the win over Wolves due to Kerrea Gilbert's injury and Ledley does a good job in that position also fitting Dave Jones' preference to have pacy, positive fullbacks who can overlap. Whittingham also has spent time playing at full back allowing City a fluid and dynamic left flank with good attacking threat and plenty of pace to cover. Neither player is likely to oust the impressive Kevin McNaughton but the added competition and excellent versatility now running through the squad shows good promise.

The truth of the matter is that Whittingham and Ledley are likely to be indirect competition for the left wing berth but with Ledley able to ably cover left-back and centre midfield he is always worth a place on the bench and Dave Jones can look forward to some pleasant selection dilemmas.

Onwards and upwards Bluebirds!

Don't forget, Parry is primarily a left-sided winger

Whittingham is a good buy for you boys. he's got a sweet left foot, brilliant crosser of a ball. he was a bit 'lightweight' for the premiership but he is only young, he will get better. He was well thought of by us Villa fans.
