Southend welcome back the ex-Cardiff City defender Spencer Prior to their squad after a midweek run-out for the reserves. Fellow centre half Efe Sodje also returns after suspension.
Ex-City target Luke Gutteridge replaces the banned Alan McCormack in midfield. Mitchell Cole is also out injured for the Shrimpers.
Watch out for leading scorer Freddie Eastwood, the prolific hitman still in deadly form despite Southend's position and he may not be there for much longer.
Steve Thompson is suspended for Cardiff City after collecting his fifth yellow card against Luton Town. Assuming no new striker is signed and registered in time, Kevin Campbell will start alongside top scorer Michael Chopra. Either Luigi Glombard or Andrea Feretti will take his place on the bench.
Paul Parry is still struggling with a niggling hamstring injury despite expecting to return at Spurs. Willo Flood has recovered from a dead leg and is available but new signing Peter Whittingham will have to make do with a substitutes appearance in place of Kevin Cooper.
Cardiff City (probable):
Alexander, Gilbert, McNaughton, Purse, Loovens, Ledley, McPhail, Scimeca, Flood, Campbell, Chopra.
Subs (likely):
Forde, Johnson, Whittingham, Glombard, Blake.
