Cardiff City chasing Cat's striker

Cardiff City chasing Cat's striker

Jon Stead has emerged as a top target for Cardiff City after they are seemingly out of the race to sign prolific Luton Town striker Rowan Vine. Birmingham and West Brom have become the frontrunners to sign Vine with Cardiff unable to meet the asking fee which has risen to over £3million, well above City's £400k opening offer.

Dave Jones has now turned his attention to other players with Sunderland's Jon Stead a suitable candidate. Manager Roy Keane is looking to bring fresh blood into a new look, gritty Sunderland team and has told Stead he is free to seek another club. The 23 year old started out at Huddersfield Town before moving to the Premiership with Blackburn, he cost Sunderland £1.8m but will be offloaded for far less than that.

After failing to impact at Sunderland, Stead helped Derby in their promotion push with some solid performances but the permanent deal fell through and Cardiff are set to pounce.

Stead's agent confirmed Cardiff's interest:

'Cardiff have put a bid in for Jon, but that's all I can say at the moment.'

The offer is thought to be acceptable to Keane and Stead is in negotioations over personal terms. Fellow Sunderland player Graham Kavanagh enjoyed a fantastic relationship with Cardiff and its supporters and is sure to speak highly of the club to his teammate.

Stead has 35 league goals in 123 starts at various levels in the English leagues.
