Cardiff swoop for Villa starlet

Cardiff swoop for Villa starlet

Peter Whittingham is in Cardiff today and is widely expected to sign for the Bluebirds in a deal worth between £300-350k with terms agreed and only a medical remaining.

The left-sided player is primarily a midfielder known for having a wicked cross but can also play at left back. City have been tracking Whittingham for some time and made enquiries over the summer for the player but with Aston Villa's capture of Philip Bardsley on loan from Manchester United, an improved offer from City was enough to tempt Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill to let him go.

Other clubs were said to be interested in the player but Cardiff got their man, thought to be one Dave Jones top targets for the transfer window. He will go into the squad for this weekend's game with Southend but will have to make do with a place on the bench with Jones reluctant to change his team after good recent performances.

The 22 year old made over 50 Premiership appearances for Villa, including 4 this season, scoring one goal. He also had recent loan spells with Burnley and Derby.

Widely reported in the South Wales area mic. It was on local radio and in the local paper.

As a Villa fan I would say that he never quite made it at Villa. A good left foot but physically weak and never looked like a formidable premiership player. With Bouma, Barry and Samuel he was not going to get a game that often on the left flank. He has been unused sub for a few games recently when injuries and suspensions were very bad. I must say he was excellent for England U21s and played regularly. For the price he does seem an excellent buy - but if you get promoted im not so sure if he will be a viable option!! Hope he does well!!

Never really given a good run at Vill, although always did well for England U21's. Seems very cheap at £300k but if he goes to Cardiff it might help stop Small Heath winning the Championship.
