Cardiff Match Reaction (Colchester)

Cardiff slipped up as Preston won to cut the Bluebirds` lead at the top to just 1 point. It was a disappointing result for City and they did not play well and Colchester probably just shaded the match. City were missing their inspirational big frontman but the defending was poor and Cardiff`s attacking options were limited. Kevin Campbell came in and put himself about obviously giving his all but it was not enough and proved that City will struggle as any of their first XI are unavailable.

This was the first time all season that Cardiff have lost by more than one goal and if the penalty was disappointing, the sending off was a devastating blow. Cardiff are certain to appeal after Jones was clearly angry at the decision saying
'That was not a penalty. The referee needs to take a long hard look at himself. I hope he reassess it and makes the right decision.'
Jones was equally disappointed with his sides lacklustre defending:
'They were goals that we should have dealt with. They had a game plan though, and they stuck to it and played it well."

Colchester boss Geraint Williams did not see the penalty incident but was delighted with the result:
"It was never going to be an easy game against the league leaders but the lads found that little bit extra and I'm delighted for Jamie Guy to score the winning goal. Both he and Ritchie Jones are bright young lads who want to do well and they certainly impressed today.'
City need top pick themselves up for the visit of 3rd place Burnley, another club with a tiny first team squad, and will be looking to get the performance to the extremely high standards they have set for themselves.

Some squad members are beginning to look a little jaded and Joe Ledley in particular looked below par. It`s not surprising and the International looks in need of a rest. Willo Flood made a difference when he came on against Colchester and added some impetus to the attack. Flood has waited patiently for a start and has looked good during several substitute appearances, he was full of running and unafraid to take on his man. There is certainly no need for a knee-jerk reaction from Jones but 4 points from the last 4 games sees Cardiff lose their lead and some momentum from the season.
