Magnificent Marshall Form For Cardiff City

Cardiff City were dealt a devastating and cruel late blow when Paulinho flicked in a low cross in the third of four added minutes on Sunday but the result was no more crushing to anyone but City goalkeeper David Marshall who was simply outstanding thoughout the match and deserved the clean sheet.

The sheer amount and quality of posession Spurs enjoyed, along with their impressive attacking unit meant that they would always create chances. A number of those efforts came from range with Andros Townsend particularly wasteful of some promising attacking positions by cutting in and shooting rather than looking to pass.

Saves from Sigurdsson and Eriksen in the first half, and an excellent late block to deny Kyle Naughton were all inspirational moments from the Scotsman but another second half save sttod out as indicative of hs form.

Former Swansea man Gylfi Sigurdsson was the least effective of the Spurs starting XI but he produced a magnificent curling effort midway through the second half. No keeper in the world would have saved that effort but with Marshall beaten the ball dipped very late and cannoned straight to Soldado whose snapshot effort was brilliantly blocked by Marshall's legs. The agility and concentration required to make that save was exemplary and even in the Premiership you rarely see chances like that saved.

Marshall has been a stand-out player for Cardiff City this term. He was again in fine form to deny Everton with smart saves from Jelavic and co while his handling and ability under the high ball nowadays mark him as a completely different player to the cross-shy goalkeeper Dave Jones signed from Norwich City back in 2009.
