Unlucky Conway Left Out Of Cardiff City Squad
Cardiff City winger Craig Conway was the unfortunate fall guy as he was axed from City's 25 man Premiership squad and will be unable to feature in Malky Mackay's plans. Less surprising was the omission of Etien Velikonja and Filip Kiss, but the Scottish wideman will have been devastated to miss out.
Conway became disillusioned with a lack of chances last season and even asked for a transfer away from the club. That request was rejected, and after getting a chance in the first team due to injuury - he became a very important player and certainly played a big part in the promotion campaign.
A key decision for Mackay will have been the apparent lack of width in his 25 man squad where Craig Noone is probably the only out and out winger available now. Younsger Kadeem harris is under 21 so does not need to be registered and he too offers genuine width and pace. The likes of Bellamy, Odemwingie and Tommy Smith are thought of as highly effective from wide roles while midfielders such as Whittingham, Kim and Cowie can all operate in wide roles but prefer to play more centrally.
Conway is now likely to move out on loan, and would be an excellent acquisition for any Championship or SPL side. He does not seem to feature in mackay's thinking, despite his good form of last season and a lack of genuine pace or trickery may be behind that decision. What you do get from 'the Bull' is a tremendous work rate, and a willing runner on either flank, capable of crossing very accurately from the by-line or from deep.
Wherever he moves next, Craig Conway can think himself unlucky not to have been given a chance in the Premiership. He is unlikely to have torn defenses apart, but as a willing and cultured wideman with proven quality - he certainly wouldn't have let anybody down as a squad player.
