Cardiff City are currently top of the Championship and even a bad run of form would see us in a decent position come January - of course, with players like Bellamy & Mutch returning to fitness and Smith, Cowie and co yet to return - we hope to further extend our lead and remain in the automatic promotion positions.
Mackay remains keen to add to his squad come January, but even more important in the promotion race will be which of the competing teams can hang onto their best players. Wifried Zaha is key to Palace's hopes, wingers Ince and Phillips will be under speculation at Blackpool while the time is surely nigh for Whittingham to play again in the Premiership. There have been bids previously rebuffed, but City need to keep hold of the playmaker - even at the expense of bringing any new faces in.
Malky Mackay has promised Whitts will not be sold. We've heard it before of course, but I trust Mackay's word on this far more than Hammam's on Gabbidon / Earnshaw. You get the feeling his promise is based on speaking with the owners, and Whittingham himself - and with all three in agreement, it seems a deal is unlikely. Mackay told the CCFC official site:
'Peter has signed new contracts since I've been at the club, in the summer signing a new long-term deal with Cardiff City, outlining his ambitions for this football club, it's nice when clubs take interest in your players, but he's certainly not going to be going anywhere in January, that's a promise.'
'I was very strong in my views to our owners in terms of us building a team to challenge and for that our best players need to be here, of which Whitts falls into that category.'
Whittingham is not only a truly gifted player, he is of even more importance to Cardiff City given our style of play. Simply, everything goes through him and while we have players who could cover injury or suspension if required - nobody at the moment has the quality to bring what Whitts does to the Bluebirds team. Hopefully he will be playing in the EPL next season.... with Cardiff City.
