Cardiff City's interest in Tommy Smith, experienced wing/forward at QPR, came about several weeks ago and he has remained a target for Malky Mackay's Bluebirds. However, with the arrivals of Kim Bo Kyung, and Craig Bellamy - plus the fact that Craig Conway and Kadeem Harris remain outside the starting XI, it seemed another winger was not a priority for City.
We remain interested, and a bid has been accepted by QPR for a player who was not given a squad number by the Rs and who has been told he can find a new club.
Mark Hughes has confirmed that a deal had been close, but remains in the dark about why it has not been completed. He told West London Sport:
"There`s been an enquiry from Cardiff and certainly there`s an opportunity for Tommy to go there if he wants to."
"That`s been on offer for a little bit of time though and hasn`t really progressed, so I don`t know where things stand with that at this moment."
It has been suggested that Smith would prefer to remain in London given the chance, and Hughes' comments above would certainly give hoipe to any alternative suitors thinking of making a move for Smith.
It Smith is still considering a switch to South Wales, or holding out for more favourable terms - he would have the chance to link up with some familiar faces with Heidar Helguson, Malky Mackay and rumoured new signing Matthew Connelly amongst his former team-mates.
