Cardiff City were undoubtedly indebted to goalkeeper David Marshall after snatching a late win over Huddersfield Town on Friday. The Scottish stopper showed some of his best form in making several very good saves, at least three while diving at full stretch.
The Terriers were defensive minded for much of the game, but broke with opace and certainly caused problems. Fortunately for the Bluebirds, Marshall is a very adept shotstopper and had a good sight of Huddersfield's moves as they pushed forward. The former Celtic and Norwich City man is much less comfortable dealing with crosses or high balls in a packed area. To that end, Hudson, Turner and co did a good job in keepiung a high line and allowing Marshall the space to see and make his saves.
A clean sheet is always a major positive, and allowed City to nick a late winner at the other end. In truth, we were far from convincing and could easily have fallen behind to shots from Scott Arfield or Keith Southern while Oliver Norwood perhaps came closest with a rasping drive.
Marshall managed to keep Tom Heaton on the bench during the Championship campaign last season, Mackay's decision leading to former Manchester United man Heaton departing the club. Joe Lewis was brought in from Peterborough and will surely remain behind Marshall for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, after winning the man-of-the-match award in the first game, Marshall can keep up his form and give City a frim and stingy basis from which to build.
