Cardiff City are in advanced negotiations with Icelandic striker Heidar Helguson with media reports that Mackay is keen on the QPR forward who previously spent time with Mackay during a loan spell with Watford.
The Bluebirds do have an flirtation with QPR strikers having shown strong interest in Jamie Mackie and Tommy Smith. Jay Bothroyd too could have been open to a return to South Wales but this option appear to be ruled out by City.
Helguson will turn 35 just days into this coming season, and is not going to offer pace, guile or too much in the way of subtlety up front. Nevertheless, he is hugely experienced and has good pedigree in the English league system.
Most importantly, Helguson would offer a 'plan B' - something we struggled with at times last season. Opponents who thwarted our usual style, nullified City's threat and all too often took points from us. With Miller, Earnshaw and Mason all shorter players in attacker - only the inexperienced Rudy Gestede offered height and aerial power. In Etien Velikonja, City have another who prefers to play on the shoulder so a more powerful option like Helguson could be of use.
Whether or not this deal is likely to go through - it is likely to split fans. Helguson is far from an inspirational and exciting signing, but he is undoubtedly effective at his own game and would bring something different.
Malky is still chasing a defender, striker and attacking midfield option.
