Cardiff City Squad Review (11/12): Darcy Blake
A brief look at the individual contributions of all the major Cardiff City players over the course of the 2011/12 season. The 'rating` as given is not purely based on performance but more the impact that player had compared to what we could realistically have expected at the start of the year and given their own standards and reputation.
23 - Darcy Blake
nother season, another frustrating campaign for the archetypal fringe player. Once again, his versatility seemed to hinder any chance Blake has of establishing himself as a regular starter and with Kevin McNaughton as first choice right-back he was again left to kick his heels on the bench. With only five subs to choose from, Blake is a valuable squad member able to cover across the back four and in midfield - each of which he did at some stage over the season.
Mackay re-assured Blake that he remains part of his plans, but you cant help think that Darcy needs to be playing regularly to improve. He is a very solid player, and has never let us down despite never gaining the momentum and regular gametime most need to find their best form. There are a host of Championship clubs that would love to have him, and where he would be a regular starter as he looks to continue his solid Welsh International career to date.
Blake made a number of appearances from the bench, and a few starting to cover injuries etc but whilst he continues to serve as a very useful back-up option - he must surely be considering where his future lies.
Season`s Rating: 5/10
