Cardiff City Squad Review (11/12): Aron Gunnarsson

A brief look at the individual contributions of all the major Cardiff City players over the course of the 2011/12 season. The 'rating` as given is not purely based on performance but more the impact that player had compared to what we could realistically have expected at the start of the year and given their own standards and reputation.

17 - Aron Gunnarsson

nother free transfer signing, and ostensibly the replacement for outgoing midfielder Gavin Rae, I have to admit I was completely wrong about Gunnarsson and instead of the spoiling, dogged and defensive midfield player I had thought - he proved himself a very accomplished central midfielder able to contribute all over the park. Gunnarsson, showed an exemplary attitude, strong tackling but also a desire to get forward and a powerful presence in attack at times.

A return of 5 goals over the season does not tell the full story, and Gunnarsson was almost ever-present and though he, like so many others, was unable to re-create his best form over the latter part of the season - his contribution was consistent and impressive. The obvious additional facet to his game is the tremendous long throw that we came to rely a little too heavily on but Gunnar was ever willing and caused havoc on many occasions as a useful attacking option.

Of all the midfielders, Gunnarsson seemed to complement key man Whittingham better than any other. He matured into a true box-to-box midfielder and showed unquestionable commitment throughout to cap a strong first season for the Bluebirds. If he can continue that level of performance, and even improve next season - he will remain a key player for the Bluebirds.

Season`s Rating: 8/10
