Cardiff City Squad Review (11/12): Craig Conway

A brief look at the individual contributions of all the major Cardiff City players over the course of the 2011/12 season. The 'rating` as given is not purely based on performance but more the impact that player had compared to what we could realistically have expected at the start of the year and given their own standards and reputation.

11 - Craig Conway

onway arrived from Dundee United over the summer and was immediately installed as the only natural wide player in the Bluebirds squad. He played almost exclusively on the left flank, but is predominantly right footed and though a willing runner, and direct - he did not appear a 'tricky` winger. Conway became very important in the first team, and scored some good goals before injury and poor form affected his contribution.

After returning from injury, Conway did not appear to have the same confidence and his impact was limited. He lost his place in the side, and City suffered through a distinct lack of width. He did return to the starting line-up towards the latter part of the season and scored a dramatic and stunning late winner against Portsmouth only for his season to be cruelly ended by an ankle ligament injury.

Conway`s impact is difficult to analyse, he was certainly important to City and brought plenty of positives though he too, struggled to find an established role in an un-balanced midfield. There`s a good chance Conway will be more settled next season, and with an alternative wide option on the right - his opportunities and space could be far more apparent.

Season`s Rating: 6/10
