Cardiff City Squad Review (11/12): Whittingham

A brief look at the individual contributions of all the major Cardiff City players over the course of the 2011/12 season. The 'rating` as given is not purely based on performance but more the impact that player had compared to what we could realistically have expected at the start of the year and given their own standards and reputation.


7 - Peter Whittingham

t is absolutely apparent how important Whitts is to Cardiff City and he was once again our most influential player over the course of the season. Sublime at times in the first half of the campaign, he was closely marked and unable to contribute so much over the second - and our form resultantly dropped. His creative influence, superb delivery and vital goals are a key feature to our game and he has worked hard on defensive positioning too.

For all the positives, Whittingham remains a difficult player to incorporate. We look most balanced with him playing in a wide left midfield role, though he will never be a natural 'winger` to take people on and is not particularly quick. However, his influence from wide is nullified and it seems somewhat a waste of such a mercurial talent. However, Whittingham is not suited to being part of a midfield duo so Mackay was always winded to play a midfield three. That, and the lack or a right winger meant we often looked unbalanced and lacked width. There were also many occasions when Whittingham was played in front of the back four, looking to dictate play and control the game - however, is impact was significantly reduced in this deep role and we missed his guile and shooting in the final third.

CCFC and Malky Mackay have made it clear that Peter Whittingham is a key player and not for sale. There will undoubtedly be some interest in the former Aston Villa man, but a bid of 5m would surely be needed to even consider a sale. Hopefully, with the addition of some width and space, Whittingham will remain and have the space and time he needs to make real waves in the Championship next seqason.
