Cardiff City Squad Review (11/12): Mark Hudson

A brief look at the individual contributions of all the major Cardiff City players over the course of the 2011/12 season. The 'rating` as given is not purely based on performance but more the impact that player had compared to what we could realistically have expected at the start of the year and given their own standards and reputation.

5 - Mark Hudson

udson was named as Malky Mackay`s new captain for the season, and has continued to grow from an inauspicious first season with City into a wholehearted and very accomplished central defender. His leadership skills and aerial ability have been a feature of our successful spells and we certainly missed him when unavailable. Hudson established himself firmly as first choice centre-half and was able to significantly reduce his vulnerability when turning or with attackers running at him.

A remaining worry for Hudson is his worrying propensity to dive into challenges he has no chance of winning, especially in the wide areas. Once committed, opponents often gain a yard on him and all-too-often he conceded a dangerous free-kick or yellow card when there was little danger if he had remained goal-side.

Hudson was involved in one of the most memorable moments of the season, with his phenomenal goal against Derby County a clear highlight. Hudson`s strike from his own half was a great moment and is quite probably the most unlikely goal at CCS thus far, and from the most unlikely source.

Mark Hudson remains a very accomplished Championship centre-half and is clearly an important part of the team and dressing room. He can be very happy with his contribution this season, and will surely remain a big player for the Bluebirds going forward.

Season`s Rating: 7/10
