West Ham Await Cardiff City, As Southampton Go Up

Cardiff City booked a play-off date with West Ham after the Hammers were denied the automatic promotion that many fancied for them all season. Reading's miraculous run, and Southampton's consistent and excellent form have seen West Ham miss out - and they now await the Bluebirds in the play-offs.

Needing Saints to slip-up, West Ham did all they could with a brace of well taken goals from Carlton Cole. Hull got a late consolation, but Upton Park was already subdued with news from St Mary's.

Southampton brushed aside any thoughts of an upset by thumping Coventry City 4-0. Playing at home was a big bonus, while even with the added pressure of automatic promotion - ther are few more desirable opponents than the Sky Blues who are already relegated and their depleted squad was packed with inexperienced and untried youngsters.

Congratulations to Southampton and Reading. West Ham will be our play-off opponents, while the other tie sees Blackpool face Birmingham City.
