Cardiff City scored a crucial second goal midway throught he second half of a somewhat fortuitous victory over Derby County last night. The second goal really was vital, and was in fact an incredible strike fro, all all people, centre-half Mark Hudson.
There could be few less likely scorers of such a goal (perhaps Marshall, McPhail and possibly McNaughton would have been 'longer shots' - excuse the pun!). However, a magnificent 68 yard strike from Captain Hudson provided another 'I was there' moment at the CCS.
Aron Gunnarsson had nearly beaten Derby goalkeeper from 35 yards in the first half, but Fielding recovered to claw the snap-shot away. However, when Hudson was encouraged to shoot from his own half - the chances were stacked against him.
The goal has many similarities with David Beckham's acclaimed strike early in his Manchester United career, scoring a superb effort against Wimbledon. Hudson's was even slightly further, and although hit brilliantly - took an age to drift over Fielding's head and drop neatly into the net - leaving the keeper sprawling and tangled in his own netting.
Congratualtions to mark Hudson, this goal was no fluke and well worth a look when tthe highlights come out. He joins the likes of Bluebirds legends John Buchanan and Paul Miller with memorable strikes from distance. Even more important though were the three points to consolidate our place in the play-offs.
