Cardiff City play Millwall this weekend desperately needing a win to end a run of poor form for the Bluebirds. Despite that form, other results have gone our way with many of our rivals also suffering from a poor sequence of results.
It was a very similar situation last season, when back-to-back defeats by Ipswich and Palace were followed by a disappointing home draw with Barnsley. This came as City were desperately chasing the automatic promotion spot that Norwich eventually took.
At the end of March, Cardiff City travelled to play Millwall- a side already safe but unlikely to make the play-offs and a difficult side to beat. The Bluebirds took the lead, but then needed a Peter Whittingham goal to equalise. With the points up for grabs, winger Chris Burke scored an 80th minute goal which should have been enough for the win.
Bluebirds fans, however, will remember with sinking hearts that reckless and un-necessary decision from on-loan goalkeeper Stephen Bywater which saw him charge out of goal, intending to clear an inocuous Millwall ball forward only to be beaten to the bounce by Steve Morison who coolly finished.
Although City went on to beat Sheff Utd and Portsmouth, those two (Millwall) dropped points were absolutely crucial and set the tone for an ultimately disappointing end to the season - with Bywater again at fault as we crashed out of the play-offs.
Cardiff City have another chance to use a Millwall game as a springboard and set the tone for the tense run-in. This time it's a new group of players, a new manager and crucially - a home game. A win is up-for-grabs and would be a massive 3 points for the Bluebirds. Hopefully, this chance will be taken.
