Cardiff City dipped into the transfer market just once since the season start, that to bring in highly rated Coventry City defender Ben Turner to South Wales. The move was a little surprising since we are severely lacking options in midfield and attack, yet have an abundance of players at centre-half.
Nevertheless, Mackay opted to bring in another player, and in Turner - we have someone tipped to go far, and looking to impress after an injury hit campaign last year. He joined up with his team-mates last week, but will still only be meeting the numerous players who were away with their respective International squads.
There's no doubt that we remain somewhat vulnerable in defence, and that the Hudson / Gerrard combination does not seem to equal the sum of the two players combined abilities. With Mackay spending a sizable chunk on Turner's capture, you'd have to assume he will soon be number one choice at City - but that may not be for the upcoming clash with Doncaster Rovers.
Turner has been in full training for some time, but has not featured competitively since November 2010 - an awfully long time out of action. Mcakay will not want to rush him, and will want his medical team to fully assess Turner's fitness.
It would seem that Hudson, Gerrard, Turner and Blake are the most likely contenders for the two positions. Mackay has so far opted against making chances where necessary and has stuck with the same partnership at centre-half for every league game so far. A bit more pace, solidity and ability to find the midfielders in space would be most welcome for Cardiff City going forward - Mackay has a difficult decision to make prior to the home clash with Doncaster Rovers.
This week saw Cardiff City Football Club, and football in general overshadowed by the tragic and untimely death of lifelong Bluebirds fan Mike Dye. Mikey was known to many around the club and many were extremely saddened and hurt to hear of the incident which took his life. Circumstances surrounding the events of Tuesday events have not been helped by some upsetting and ill-founded press reports, with some despicable and hurtful allegations made by supposedly reputable media sources.
If you are able, and would like to make a contribution to Mikey`s partner Nathalie, and their children as they try to come to terms with this tragedy, please donate here.
