Cardiff City Seal AET Win Over Oxford Utd

Cardiff City needed extra time to see off plucky Oxford United and it was a goal of real quality from Peter Whittingham that won the game, one of a number of first team players involved.

City took the lead early on, with flying winger Craig Conway getting his first for the club. It was an untidy goal, helped in via a hefty deflection.

Oxford United levelled when Simon Cliss's shot beat Tom Heaton and it was no more than the hosts deserved. Rudy Gestede and Sol Taiwo were both withdrawn injured and City lacked quality, Jon Parkin missing a gilt edged chance and seeing another clawed off the line.

Oxford enjoyed several spells of dominance, but lacked the killer instinct. Cardiff midfielder Ibby Farah almost netted a stunning goal but saw his effort rebound off the crossbar. Extra time beckoned and Peter Whittingham's 30-yard effort was good enough to win any game.

The tie was sealed late on when sub Nat Jarvis steered a header over keeper Ryan Clarke. It wasn't a cup special, but certainly a decent run-out for the likes of Gyepes, Parkin and Quinn with some invaluable experience for the youngsters.
