Cardiff City have had a small playing squad over the past years, and sometimes struggled to name a full complement of seven substitutes for Championship fixture. Now, the Football League has sanctioned a return to the days of 5 substitutes meaning that competition is difficult and the more fringe players will struggle for any gametime.
The Bluebirds have also not had a designated reserve team in recent years, instead relying on hastily arranged non-competitive fixtures when the need arose but players returning from injury (e.g. Koumas, Drinkwater) would surely have benefitted from more regular reserve action.
Bristol Rover boss Paul Buckle has been in contact with Cardiff City to try and secure regular action for his fringe and returning players. he told the Bristol Evening Post:
'I've already spoken to Terry Skiverton at Yeovil about that and have also been in contact with Cardiff City. There are quite a few clubs in the same boat now and it's very important we get regular reserve games.'
Players like Darcy Blake, Aaron Wildig and Solomon Taiwo are all likely to be involved with reserve games where possible. All will be trying to get into the first team squad so will need to be match fit if they are to to take advantage of any chances. Youth players like Farah, Jarvis and co. will also benefit, as will those returning from injury.
Other clubs likely to be involved are Swindon Town, Exeter City and Hereford United.
