Cardiff City are on the verge of signing winger Craig Conway on a free transfer from Dundee United - though there is no official confirmation as yet. Malpas is a Dundee United fan writing for the Vital Dundee United site:
What's his best position? Can he cover other positions?
He's a natural wide player, can play either side but usually on the left.
What sort of player is he? (power, pace, skilful, creative, tackler etc)
He's certainly creative and dangerous. He's reasonably fast and has a decent eye for goal - he's likely to chip in with a few goals over the season.
Any particular strengths/ weaknesses?
He does have pace and his crossing ability is a definite advantage. For Dundee United, he's usually been high in 'assists'. However, he did struggle with injuries last season and only scored three times.
I assume you'd have liked to keep him next year?
Definitely, he's coming into his prime and it was very unfortunate that he missed so much of last season. I'm disappointed to lose him but he hadn't signed a new deal and there were a lot of clubs interested.
Will he be a good player in the Championship?
The Championship is obviously more competitive than the SPL and faily physical. I think the creative attributes he brings will certainly be a major asset, if he can stay fit.
Is Cardiff a good move for him?
Yes. Apparently there was interest from Rangers, but he'll get more games at Cardiff. For a free transfer, you've got a very good player.
Here is some typical Conway action from the Scottish Cup final 2010, so you can judge for yourself. Scored twice, once with left foot and the other with his right.
Many thanks to Malpas over at Vital Dundee United for his views.
