Cardiff City's new manager Malky Mackay did make an offer to his former number two at Watford to join him in South Wales. However, Sean Dyche was in talks to become Watford's new boss and was appointed to the role yesterday - ending any links with Cardiff City.
Cardiff City still have assistant manager Terry Burton on the books, but it was always likely that Mackay would want to continue his fruitful partnership with Dyche. The new Watford manager told www.thisislocallondon.co.uk:
"Malky wanted me to go with him and there was a window between when Malky took the job and then a window when they came back and spoke to me.
"Fortunately for me, as it has turned out, Laurence Bassini, the owner, got it contact with me."
"We had a conversation with the board and then obviously they had to consider other people and speak to the people and then fortunately for me, they decided on the right man.
"So that was great news and it gives me a chance and a platform to go and experience what it is to be a manager."
Mackay may have alternatives in mind for the role, but may also opt to utilise Terry burton's experience and knowledge of the club and players during an initial transition period. He will need to move fast to pull together a squad capable of challenging and rebuilding from virtually nothing.
