Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay will not be joined by his former number two at Watford after Sean Dyche was handed the managerial role at Vicarage Road. Dyche replaces Mackay, ending speculation that he would follow to continue as number two in South Wales.
Watford's decision means that Mackay will now decide whether tio bring in his own choice as assistant, or allow current number two Terry burton to remain in position - at least for the time being. Burton, who himself was brought in from Watford, is an astute tactician and was very 'hands-on' with the players while Dave Jones was in charge. it was not unusual for Burton to take coaching sessions, or lead discussion sessions with the players. he is held in high regard by the Bluebirds players, as well as externally.
Mackay may well have other candidates in mind, but he remains relatively inexperienced in management - as are the Cardiff City board inexperienced, and CEO Gethin Jenkins in their respective roles. Burton is vastly experienced and knows the club very well also. His insight into a major squad re-building exercise could prove crucial, while he could also aid the transition period as Mackay settles into his new club.
Mackay will move to Cardiff shortly and make a decision on his backroom team before undertaking the major squad re-building job.
